I remember one of my stepsisters asking me how I handled those moments when you realize what you’re working on is nothing more than a derivative of another type of media you love. The truth is I don’t care.
All of these shorts and scripts have very apparent influences and are, by in large, homages to my favourite thrillers. And though I do think the average person might not notice it because no one cares to dig deeper in these shitty little shorts and scripts, I may have gone too far with the homage in this instance.
I mean, it is basically Eyes Wide Shut but with comedians. I think it works but also I’m not in a hurry to work on a second draft because I know I’ll never be able to afford the locations and the extras to make it. But it is cool to imagine a world in which I get to dress people up in bespoke masks.
I’ll be honest, I have no follow-up thoughts because it seems like a waste of time and energy to invest in something that has no hope of getting realized. It’s just too expensive! Even though it’s great to not think about budget or practicalities in these early stages, it feels kinda pointless to get more attached to something so unfeasible.
It was a fun exercise at least. And maybe even a fun read too.
