Ok, so, this one has a special place in my heart because even if it doesn’t get that level up I feel it’s capable of, this is the one that revived my passion. There were a couple false starts before this, but once I started ORBIT, I found myself looking forward to whenever I could sit back down with it and learn more about Moon and Simone.
The origin behind the bulk of the story comes from having celebrity and celebrity internet crushes. My list of crushes is infinite, but there was one night where I was binging Polygon’s YouTube content because my heart was all a flutter over one of their video personalities. At one point, I noticed she wore silver rings on her right ring and pinky fingers, just like me! For an amount of time I’m acutely aware of but too ashamed to admit, I thought that maybe was a sign we could be meant for each other.
We all know what that’s like, right? To find yourself painting a totally imaginary portrait of your crush? It’s gross to silently pile on expectations for someone you don’t know to make you whole, but loneliness will take any mind to strange places. Even though fantasizing and romanticizing is perfectly natural and normal, I’m still embarrassed by my penchant for it. But that shame might make for a decent short.
Here’s what I want to know before I move on to draft 4:
“It was all a dream” is obviously the worst shit ever, but do I get away with it by giving enough reality post-fantasy?
Obviously, the Mulholland Drive comparisons are unavoidable, but is ORBIT too close to it?
The continuity error device, or how things aren’t supposed to match exactly, is supposed to convey fantasizing/my writing process where I know one minor detail is extremely vivid but how to get there is kind of glossed over (you’ll see it when I upload super drafts where I just go, “And then a montage of this happens.”). Does it work or does it suck?
Yes, Mulholland Drive is definitely an inspiration but I also want to shout out 3 Women, Audition, The Player, Ingrid Goes West, Scenes from a Marriage, “Spring” by Angel Olsen and Rab’s Bonus Story from DQ XI for planting some seeds in my head.
