spoil (draft 1)

Another short about projecting desires onto some poor, unsuspecting soul (see ORBIT & SHADOW). What the hell, man? What does that say about me and the state of mind I’m in? Rhetorical question, please don’t answer that for real.

I feel like this one has potential if only because it’s fairly low maintenance to actually produce. Some of these drafts I have gotten over the hang-up of listening to my inner-critic ask, “How are you going to pay for all this?” It’s a reasonable question to ask myself because I can’t get married to an idea that’ll bankrupt me, but only writing—at this early stage—for affordability is stifling. It’s way more fun to not even consider what I’ll need to do to make this shit happen. That said, what I do like about SPOIL is that it feels practical to actually make, which I can’t say is true of most of the scripts published in this notes section.

My biggest problem, besides it being more of the same subject matter, is the pacing. When I read this, everything feels like it’s happening too quickly. However, I also have a hunch that if this gets made, in the editing process I’ll be looking for ways to speed it up. So, I don’t know. As you read this, would you mind paying extra attention to the pacing?

Here’s what I need to know before moving on to draft 2:

  • Does there need to a be draft 2? I mean, it’s doing the same things that ORBIT & SHADOW do better. Is a projecting desires trilogy necessary?

  • How is the pacing? Slower burn? Speed it up? Are there scenes missing? If so, what?

  • I kind of want Rebecca to wakeup rather than flatline. Thoughts?

Shoutout to Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca, Steven Soderbergh’s Side Effects, and Intolerable Cruelty.
